Abstract

Objective: We aimed to investigate the tetanus vaccination status among pregnant women and the factors influencing it, along with their knowledge about Tdap (Diphtheria-Tetanus-acellularr Pertussis) vaccination.

Method: This observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at the X Hospital Primary Health Care Center (PHCC) in October. A total of 72 pregnant women in their last two trimesters, who presented to the hospital for any reason and were willing to participate, were included. Data were collected using a questionnaire assessing participants' socio-demographic characteristics, tetanus vaccination status, and awareness of tetanus vaccination.

Results: 90.3% of the participants knew the importance of tetanus vaccination during pregnancy. Of the included women, 54.2% had started tetanus vaccination, with 69.2% receiving the first dose and 30.8% receiving the second dose. Among those not yet vaccinated, 36.4% were scheduled for vaccination by the PHCC, 3% had completed the recommended 5 doses previously, and 12.1% had not yet been scheduled. 22.3% of participants expressed unwillingness to receive tetanus vaccination, citing concerns such as side effects, lack of knowledge, and fear of harming the baby. 83.3% of the participants were not aware of Tdap vaccination, and among those informed, 62.5% expressed reluctance to receive it. A statistically significant relationship was found between the desire for Tdap vaccination and income level (P<0.001).

Conclusion: Our findings indicate low awareness among pregnant women regarding the need for postpartum tetanus booster doses and Tdap vaccination, which also protects newborns from pertussis.
