Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are one of the most commonly used drug groups in the world. Unnecessary and long-term use of proton pump inhibitors is common and can lead to complications. Additionally excessive use of proton pump inhibitors imposes an economic burden on the health system. In this study,it is aimed to investigate the characteristics of family medicine residents related to their knowledge, awareness and attitudes about proton pump inhibitors.

The study was cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical. Our sample consisted of 142 family medicine residents working in Istanbul,33 questions was collected by applying the online questionnaire method created by the researchers. The analysis of the available data was performed with the SPSS statistical program. The significance level was accepted as p< 0.05 in all statistical tests.

In the study, only10% of the family medicine physicians stated that they rarely prescribed PPIs. İt was determined that physicians prescribed PPIs most frequently for GERD indication. The most preferred active substance among physicians was pantaprazole. In our study, more than half of the physicians stated that they educated the patient about side effects, especially decreased absorption of vitaminB12 and iron.Approximately two thirds of  physicians answered questions about drug-drug interactions and careful usage correctly.

With the ever increasing number of observational studies showing the association of PPIs with multiple side effects,it is necessary to address the issue with a holistic, comprehensive and multifaceted approach and to investigate the underlying causes in order not to overlook the potential life-saving benefits of PPIs and to prevent misuse.
